This study provides the first evidence of common genetic variants that influence the normal variation in the timing of female sexual maturation. The researchers say these findings are significant because girls with an earlier age at menarche tend to have a greater body mass index (BMI) and more body fat than girls who begin menstruating at a later age.


New guidelines to fight obesity in pregnancy issued

Starting pregnancy at a healthy weight and gaining the right amount during pregnancy is critical to giving a baby a healthy start in life, the March of Dimes said today in response to new guidelines from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The Institute of Medicine issued new guidelines for the amount of weight a woman should gain during pregnancy. While the guidelines for underweight, normal weight and overweight women were unchanged, the IOM added a new category for obese women, with a narrow range of weight gain. Those women should only gain between 11 and 20 pounds during pregnancy


Breastfeeding duration and weaning diet may shape child's body composition

Sahlgrenska Academy to lead major European project on obesity

The new project is an interdisciplinary research project covering the neurobiological and socio-psychological causes of obesity. It has been awarded EUR 6 million from the EU, corresponding to just over SEK 60 million. The project will gather scientists from seven countries, and will be co-ordinated from the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden
